STAT Testing:
The origin of the word STAT comes from the Latin word 'statim', which means immediately or right away. With respect to the laboratory and other medical fields, STAT indicates that information and or action is essential for immediate medical decision making on behalf of the patient - an action, a diagnosis, or a prognosis is contemplated in response to this information.
Therefore, if immediate patient care is not the stimulus, then the test request is not a legitimate STAT.
